C H A R A C T E R I N F O
Character Name: Armin Arlert
Series: Attack on Titan
Age: 15
Sex/Gender: Male
Living Preference: The standard dorms are just fine
Canon Point: Chapter 49
History: Armin's wiki page
Personality: Once a timid child with no self-confidence or sense of worth, Armin has gradually begun to grow into a more self-assured, determined, and brave young boy with enough confidence to recognize and exercise his personal talents for the good of mankind. This change is due largely to the influence of his closest friends and superior officials, as well as his firsthand experiences and observations as a soldier.

In the beginning, despite Armin's righteous belief in his own dream to explore the world outside the walls he lived in, he initially never had the drive to pursue this aspiration or take any real action for himself. Being physically weaker than most, there was never a chance of him holding his own in a physical fight, making him feel inherently powerless to 'stronger' people. Having to rely on his friends Eren and Mikasa to rescue him from fights and watching them get hurt in his place, he was convinced that he was a burden to others and too weak to accomplish anything of real worth. Even though his exceptional mind had already shown promise since his childhood, he didn't see it.

This mindset followed him throughout his training as a soldier and through his first real battle against the titans, as he struggled to keep up physically with his friends and comrades and eventually succumbed to his fear of the titans. His lack of self-worth culminated with the apparent death of his best friend Eren, who had been eaten by a titan before Armin's eyes in an effort to protect him. Convinced he was only good for getting his friends killed and unable to recognize the many notable achievements his quick thinking had already accomplished, Armin hit his lowest point, going to far as to wishing he had died along with his friend.

It was only after Eren's miraculous survival that Armin's opinion of himself finally changed. Under the threat of execution, Armin's friends unwaveringly entrusted their lives to him to protect, to his surprise. It was then that Armin realized that his depreciation was all in his head. His friends had always trusted in him and recognized his talents as something valuable. From that point on, he became more assured in the usefulness of his own talents and worked hard to use his personal strengths for the good of others. This was reinforced gradually over his time as a soldier as Commanders and other high-ranking officers frequently recognized his intelligent mind and took his theories and strategies into serious consideration.

Armin is typically softspoken in the sense that he chooses to think carefully before he speaks. Although he still retains some of his natural timidity from childhood, he actually prefers to listen and analyze, recognizing now that his mind and his words are his greatest strengths. When he speaks, his words are often precise and have significance. Although usually plainly- sometimes harshly- honest, there have been notable times where he has consciously misconstrued his words to convince or manipulate others into reacting in specific ways. Understanding people's underlying motives and knowing the right words to say, he is also capable of very convincing acting to accompany his words if he's dead set on digging out a specific result. This behavior is solely directed towards those who pose threats to his friends or to humanity in general (i.e. the titanshifters). Otherwise, he's typically his polite, honest self.

Armin has always had admirable and just morals from a young age, though they're far from 'idealistic' fantasies. With his bright mind he has always looked at the world around him objectively, and as such has developed very realistic beliefs. He views leaving the walls as a good thing not only because of his personal dream to explore the world, but because he truly believes that humanity won't be able to survive forever within the walls. But while he inherently believes that humanity deserves survival and protection, he also recognizes mankind's faults as well. Since he was a child he had questioned their King's motives for making any mention of the outside world taboo, and after discovering the government-issued genocide that caused his grandfather's death some years later, Armin became impassioned to stop such unforgivable injustices and make change to prevent anything that catastrophic from happening again, though he doubted just how much he could accomplish on his own.

From that point, Armin displayed an unwavering loyalty and dedication to mankind, following his oath as a soldier to give up his life for mankind's survival without faltering. This was first notably displayed as he pleaded for his friends' lives and his own at Trost, where he stared down the barrels of countless soldiers' guns and swore his loyalty to the cause. Throughout the series and right up to the manga's current events, Armin has consistently insisted on putting himself in harm's way for the sake of saving the lives of his friends and comrades and to ensure humanity's continued survival. He volunteered to be the one to stay behind on his first recon mission when he, Jean, and Reiner were stranded in titan territory with only one horse. He put his life on the line to identify and detain Annie after accurately deducing that she was the antagonizing female titan. Among numerous other moments, his most notable act of self-sacrifice came recently as he put himself into direct danger by confronting Bertholdt face to face in order to save the kidnapped Eren, directly antagonizing him and directing the full brunt of his aggression toward himself. A highly dangerous and near-lethal situation, and willing to die right then and there for Eren's protection, he was only saved by Commander Erwin's quick intrusion.

His loyalty to his friends is unquestionable, as apparent above. He'll willingly go to any lengths for his closests friends Eren and Mikasa, trusting in them completely and being equally trusted by them in return. Most fights and heated situations in the series with any of them involved usually result in one of them doing whatever is necessary to protect the other.

Although dedicated to his friends and to humanity's survival, he has recognized since joining the Scouting Legion that humanity's situation is more desperate than he'd previously realized, and in order to effectively win against the threat of the titans, he believes that some level of sacrifice is undoubtedly necessary, both in life and in morals. This has been a huge factor in shaping Armin's behavior over the course of the series. He has reflected and concluded that all the military officials and people he's witnessed in his life who had accomplished significant feats of success for humanity were all willing to give up their lives and the lives of others for that cause, and Armin has adopted that same methodology for himself. As previously mentioned, Armin has shown time and again his willingness to give up his life for mankind's sake, but he has also been willing to throw away his personal morals and feelings, as well. This is notably apparent as Armin has tossed out any personal reservations for bringing harm to his long-term friends when he discovers that they are titanshifters threatening humanity. He has set himself entirely on viewing them as enemies and had devised strategies to stop them, althewhile recognizing that these strategies could have lead to his friends' deaths. Armin is far from heartless- on the contrary often being overly sensitive- but being a rational thinker, he has recognized the necessity of personal sacrifice and recognizes when it is necessarry to act coldheartedly, able to weigh the stakes in any given situation.

In essence, Armin isn't strong. But his inherent kindness, sharp mind, and unwavering dedication to helping others surpasses all else. This makes him a true friend, a true soldier, and a truly strong person.

Special Abilities:
Like all of the troops in the former 104th trainees squad, Armin has received formal training and discipline as a soldier. Hand-to-hand combat, horseback riding, operation of the 3D Maneuver Gear, and general survival skills are all things he has working knowledge of. However, Armin is physically weaker than most people and struggles to use most of these abilities to their fullest effects. Although he can operate the 3DMG, he rarely ever uses it for combat purposes.

Armin's strongest attribute lies with his intelligence. He has an aptitude for excellent judgement, being able to view everything from an objective point of view. This makes him capable of noticing small details within given situations and quickly drawing honest conclusions about them without being clouded by personal bias. He is able to choose the most appropriate course of action for the situation at hand while simultaneously weighing the possible causes and effects of those actions. He is also particularly good at making important decisions very quickly, even under extreme pressure. This level of mental agility helps him to produce highly effective tactical strategies that have saved himself, his comrades, and indirectly all of humanity on numerous occasions.

Armin's official statistics
Battle Skill: 2/10
Agility: 6/10
Strategy: 10/10
Teamwork: 8/10
Judgement: 10/10

How did your character die? (For the sake of potential canon updating in the future) Armin will not be able to recall the exact cause of his own death. However, it will be assumed that after mentally antagonizing Bertholdt in an effort to get him to drop his guard, his enraged former friend cut him down with his 3DMG blades.

First Person: May I request a Q&A? That would be lovely.

Third Person:
Fear was powerful. It could drive people to do almost irrational things. Sometimes horrible things.

Armin knew it was fear that caused the government to shield the human race behind closed walls. It was fear that caused all the ridicule and bullying he endured for speaking his mind about the outside world. It was fear that nearly made him lose hope at Trost some time ago- a far time off now, it seems.

Armin doesn't find it that strange that he would recall these small thoughts in this moment, standing alone on the grandly imposing form of the Armored Titan, eyes fixated intently on Bertholdt, who looked back at him coldly. His former friend. It isn't strange, he thinks, because he now realized the potency of fear, and how it drove people's actions. His eyes briefly drifted to the bound form strapped to Bertholdt's back. Eren being so close to safety, yet unreachable made Armin's gut twist and his heart race at a painfully alarming rate. He was afraid, and as he mentally weighed the options of what he could do to get Eren back in his frenzied state of mind, it suddenly became all too clear to him that fear was never the hindrance. It was a driving force.

He knew what would get Bertholdt to drop his guard. He saw the chance clearly, and he understood the risks. It was this sudden moment of pure clarity that pulled his features into a tense, uncharacteristic smile, despite all the immediate danger.

Fear was powerful, and under its influence, people sometimes did terrible things.

But sometimes, Armin realized, it was necessary to become the monster.
